About Us

Welcome to Peterborough's progressive food movement.  Community Butcher Shop is an alternative to industrial meat.  All of our meat is from small local farms within 50 km of Peterborough.  We buy and carve whole animals that are ethically raised and pastured, without hormones or antibiotics.

What We Do

Community Butcher Shop is dedicated to selling meat from small local farms that raise their animals humanely and sustainably.  All meat sold in the shop comes from farms within 50kms of Peterborough. This shop grew out of a desire to feed our family local meats without any hormones or antibiotics. We want the animals we eat to be ethically raised, allowed to roam on pastures, and be eaten fresh off the farm (not frozen, or following long-haul transportation).  In the Peterborough area, we would regularly drive by local farms and see grazing animals, and fell in love with the idea of a butcher shop that serves meat exclusively from these local farms.

At one time, every community had a butcher shop that sold animals slaughtered at the local abattoir, after living on local farms.  It’s where you purchased great tasting meat raised in an ethical fashion.  It was a place where trust was earned and maintained.  It was also a place where you could find a meat expert happy to talk about the farming, slaughtering, butchering and cooking processes.  It was a place that sold meat at an affordable price for everyone in the community.  And it was a place where the butcher knew your name and your favourite steak and roast, and in time it became a community gathering spot.  This is the shop my wife and I set out to establish.  We hold dear the nearly lost tradition of buying and carving whole animals, all humanely raised on local farms with plenty of room to wander and forage.

We are passionate about great tasting meat.  We take full responsibility for all the meat we sell in our shop, and we can tell you which local farm all the meat comes from.  We follow a nose-to-tail philosophy, meaning every part of the animal gets used. We do all of our own cutting in the open-concept shop, where you can see the process from start to finish; no mysteries.  The butcher is always there to answer your questions and can help you select some lesser known, but delicious cuts of beef, pork, and lamb.

After almost completely disappearing, the neighborhood butcher shop is enjoying a small renaissance.  Specialty meat shops are gaining popularity and offer some fantastic gourmet meat options. These shops have served as pioneers for the progressive food movement.  There will always be a market for high end gourmet meat; however we feel the time is right for the neighborhood butcher shop to return to its roots of providing great, ethically raised meat that is affordable for everyone in the community.  We love the diversity that walks through our door.  It is true that raising meat ethically is more expensive; however because our meat is not shipped huge distances, or marked-up by wholesalers, we are able to offer great tasting ethically raised meat at affordable prices.  We hope this model allows us to serve everyone in the community.

We look forward to seeing you in the shop.
